The Mended Hearts, Inc. What is it?

The Mended Hearts, Inc. is an international, non-profit, self-help organization for those who have had any heart problems, their families, friends and interested persons. We have grown to an international status, with 280 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Currently there are approximately 24,000 members. In 2004-2005, Mended Hearts volunteers made more than 230,000 visits to patients in person, online or by phone.

The objectives of the Mended Hearts, Inc. are….

  • to visit and encourage, with the approval of the physician, persons with heart disease.
  • to distribute information of specific educational value to members and other persons with heart disease.
  • to counsel and provide advice and services, where possible to families of patients experiencing heart problems.
  • to establish a program of assistance to surgeons, physicians and hospital staff in their work with heart patients.
  • to cooperate with other organizations in educational and research activities pertaining to heart illness.
  • to establish and to assist in established rehabilitation programs to Mended Hearts and their families.
  • to plan and conduct suitable programs of educational and social events at monthly meetings.

What a lift for persons having heart problems, to see a healthy Mended Heart volunteer! Just being there, the Mended Heart volunteer gives the added strength the patient needs to overcome any doubts and fears. Families of patients need a very special kind of help too!

The Mended Hearts does not raise funds for patients, but serves as a referral service for help from various groups, such as the American Heart Association, Visiting Nurse Service, Visiting Homemakers, Division of Vocational Rehab and others.

Come and see what it is all about. Its fun, informative, and most of all, it’s exciting!
